An expansion project for the Shanghai Botanical Garden in Xuhui District will kick off this year, featuring about 3,000 varieties of plants.

The project is on the list of major works in Shanghai for 2020 which was recently announced on the website of the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission.

Covering 22.24 hectares, the project in the northern section of the botanical garden will highlight exquisite horticultural landscapes, the changing colors of plants and the seasons. The varieties of plants to be showcased in the updated area will be different from those in the garden's southern area.

As part of the project, scientific research facilities and visitor tour experiences will be improved.

A specific timetable for the project has yet to be announced.
