Be wary of potential hazards of substandard melamine dishware, Shanghai's market watchdog warned on Thursday.

The Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation conducted checks on 76 batches of melamine dishware and nine had failed.

Five failed for the migration amount of melamine, including those for children branded tiny footprint, KaKao Friends and ibello.

Substandard materials may have been used in their manufacture, said Zuo Ying, a senior engineer with the Shanghai Institute of Quality Inspection and Technical Research.

Four batches were substandard for the total migration level of small organic molecules and formaldehyde, and a batch of soup spoons made by Fujian Kanglimei Dishware Co and sold at a branch of NGS supermarket in Shanghai failed to meet standards.

Three failed for the consumption of potassium permanganate, which indicates the pollution level of organic substances of the products, according to the administration.

A batch of soup spoons made by Putian City Hanjiang Xinyi Dishware Co in Fujian and sold at Shanghai Jiahui Agricultural Market in Changning District were among the substandard items, the administration said.

A batch of bowls made by Nan'an City Jili Plastic Co in Fujian and sold by Shanghai Sulian Trade Co failed for poor color fastness, the red bowls turning white after being soaked, the administration said.

An investigation into the substandard products is underway.
