Shanghai doctors use advanced techniques to help prostate patients in Tibet
Doctors from Shanghai’s Renji Hospital have conducted the first Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate, a revolutionary procedure for severely enlarged prostates, in Tibet.
HoLEP is a specialized procedure that requires intensive mentored training, said doctors from Renji Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
It is a minimally invasive procedure using a state-of-the-art holmium to remove the entire portion of the prostate tissue that causes difficulty urinating and other symptoms.
The patient was a 62-year-old Tibetan man, who has had difficulty urinating for 10 years, with his symptoms worsening in the past six months.
Renji’s doctors, supporting Shigatse People’s Hospital, received the patient and decided to offer HoLEP.
The surgery led by Dr Xue Wei was complete in 12 minutes, with a good result.
“HoLEP conducted in a high-altitude region is a challenge for both medical staff and the surgery," Xue said.
"The special geographical and climate condition in such regions result in patients with enlarged prostate with key organ diseases as well as high-altitude diseases such as heart conditions," Xue added. "We hope HoLEP can be promoted in Tibetan areas under our direction and guidance to local doctors to benefit more patients.”
A urological disease diagnosis and treatment center has been established by Renji Hospital and Shigatse People’s Hospital to enhance academic communication and exchanges.
