Yancheng shares cultural, tourism richness in Shanghai
Authorities from Yancheng City, in neighboring Jiangsu Province, showcased the city's cultural and tourism richness in Shanghai on Sunday with performances, intangible cultural heritage displays, lucky draws and project signings.
Ten projects covering construction and investment, operation and management and tourism market development between Shanghai and Yancheng were signed in Xuhui District.
With a combined investment of 3.23 billion yuan (US$465 million), they involve the building of major tourism attractions, health tourism centers, cultural and innovation community blocks, demonstration zones of culture and tourism and supporting facilities.
Inheritors of the intangible cultural heritage of Yancheng — such as Dafeng porcelain carving, Sheyang straw weaving and Yandu dough modeling — displayed their skills in Shanghai. There were also performances involving opera and acrobatics. A charity auction featured paintings of Yancheng created by children with autism.
"Yancheng and Shanghai have profound historical bonds and the city is a major rice, vegetable and meat supplier of Shanghai," said Chen Weihong, vice mayor of Yancheng.
More than half a century ago, about 80,000 Shanghai zhiqing (intellectual youth) participated in farm construction at the intertidal zones of Yancheng. Many of them now consider Yancheng as a second home.
The Yancheng-Nantong high speed railway will open soon and cut the travel time between Yancheng and Shanghai to one hour, compared with the current four-hour drive.
"Yancheng is a natural oxygen bar and leisure garden of Shanghai residents," said Chen.
Yancheng is home to a number of attractions such as the Huanghai Forest Park, fauna-rich marshlands, the National Nature Reserve for Rare Birds, the Dazong Lake scenic area, Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve, Dafeng Dutch Flower Sea scenic area and Anfeng ancient town.
