Contemporary art exhibition sure to delight and surprise
A contemporary art exhibition by domestic artists has been unveiled at the Being Art Museum in the Pudong New Area.
The exhibition, “Contemporary Collection of BAM,” displays more than 70 works, including paintings, photos, sculptures and art installations, created by 56 renowned domestic artists from 2006 to 2020.
Highlights include a giant portrait of Marilyn Monroe, which is made from slips of paper tore off from fashion and entertainment magazines.
Chengdu artist Yang Qian destroyed the faces of celebrities on magazine covers and recreated them on canvas, hoping to deliver the message that the media create today’s celebrities.
Zhang Jian from Beijing is displaying an oil painting of people swimming in Beijing’s Houhai Lake. He uses very tender and soft colors of pink, blue and green to depict a romantic and relaxing scene. It reminds people of Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” and David Hockney’s swimming pool paintings.
“These works tell how contemporary art has developed in China,” said curator Li Xu. “Also, the social changes of China in the last decades.”
The exhibition will run until September 20. Admission is free.
