Artificial intelligence and 3D modeling are helping doctors to successfully conduct fully customized and precise laser surgeries for myopia.

Through the use of smart technologies, which create a single diagnostic network by integrating multiple eye detecting systems into one, patients are able to undergo detailed and comprehensive checks only through one machine. It then creates a 3D model of the patients' eyes and calculates and designs the surgical plan directly, experts told the Congress of Chinese Ophthalmological Society which concluded over the weekend in Changsha, Hunan Province.

"It is a really innovative technology, as doctors only need to conduct surgery in line with the plan, which has the least error compared with traditional methods, which need different machines and repeated measurements of the eyes," said Dr Shen Zhengwei from Shanghai-based Bright Eye Hospital Group, which introduced the latest technology from the United States-based firm Alcon.

Dr Shen Zhengwei from Bright Eye Hospital Group explains the use of the latest smart medicine for customized myopia laser surgery to his students and colleagues.

"Doctors have been planning to carry out customized operation by the ocular wavefront for years. However, the previous diagnostic technology could not help realize the goal. The result was no better than a unified surgical plan while the pre-operation checks and tests were much more complicated," Shen noted.

"This smart technology really achieves the goal and the process is simple, quick and effective. Patients have a good eyesight and good vision quality post-operation."

China is the country with the largest number of people with myopia, which affects about half of the total population. Myopia, or short-sightedness, has become a serious public health issue.

China's clinical capability on myopia laser surgery has undergone great changes and development in the past 30 years, Shen observed.

"Both the medics and patients have increasing demand for individualized, precise and tailor-made solution for better surgery outcome and better life quality. Smart medicine and artificial intelligence help us to meet the demand for more precise, comfortable and minimally invasive treatment," he said.
