'Follies' and 'Hangmen' – a feast of drama

The Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center is putting on two world-class plays, "Follies" and "Hangmen," offering two vastly different tales.

Introduced by the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center, two world-class plays — “Follies” and “Hangmen” — are coming in HD to the big screens in Shanghai.

“Follies” is a musical about a reunion of the ex-showgirls of the “Weismann’s Follies,” a crumbling theater scheduled for demolition in 1971. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather together to have drinks, sing songs and dance, just like when they were young.

Stephen Sondheim’s legendary show features two couples — Buddy and Sally — and Benjamin and Phyllis, who are haunted by the ghosts of the past and unhappy with their marriages.

Directed by Dominic Cooke, the musical won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.

Another award-winning play is “Hangmen,” created and directed by Olivier and Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh who also wrote and directed the hit film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

The hilarious drama is set in a small pub in the northern English town of Oldham. On the day the punishment of hanging is abolished in 1965, the reporters and pub regulars are thirst for hearing the reaction of Harry who is the second-best hangman in England to the news.

Amongst the curios people, Syd, Harry’s old assistant, lurks with very different motives for his visit. Horrifically, he suspected that they hanged the wrong man two years ago.

What happens next? McDonagh will continue the funny, shocking and horrific story in the theater.
