Michelin food guide launched its 2018 Shanghai edition today, with two restaurants awarded the coveted three stars, one of which is an innovative Western restaurant being awarded the top rating for the first time.

The two restaurants are T’ang Court, a Cantonese restaurant inside Langham Shanghai in Xintiandi, and Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet.

"In an unusual place that immediately plunges the customer into an experiential journey where all the senses are stimulated — Paul Pairet offers avant-garde cuisine of a very high standard, a real gourmet journey," International Director of the Michelin Guides, Michael Ellis, said of Ultraviolet, which won two stars last year.

This is Michelin food guide's second Shanghai edition, with 30 restaurants awarded one or more stars.

There are five new restaurants which have been awarded one star, including Bo Shanghai and Jean-Georges.

All awarded restaurants last year retained their stars in the new guide.
