Over 2,400 boxes of illegal fireworks were found in a container truck at an expressway on Thursday morning, police said.

Qingpu District police stopped the truck for regular checks on the S26 Huchang Expressway about 8:15am.

The truck driver refused to open the container, claiming that the goods would fall on the ground, but police forced him to open and found the illegal fireworks.

Police said the truck did not carry a sign that it was transporting explosive materials, nor was the permit for carrying fireworks valid.

Two people, including the driver, have been detained. This is the largest case of illegal fireworks confiscated in Shanghai this winter.

Qingpu police and officials from the district's fire authority check the illegal goods.

On Monday, police in Baoshan District detained one person after seizing 200 boxes of illegal fireworks hidden in soy sauce boxes at a market in Caolu Town.

Earlier this month, four people were held in Pudong after 116 boxes of fireworks were confiscated.

Shanghai has banned selling and setting off fireworks within the Outer Ring Road. Each district outside the Outer Ring Road has one legal shop authorized to sell fireworks.
